For the next several weeks I will be writing my weekly post about the country of Bulgaria. As a part of the required education needed to adopt internationally we are to write a detailed essay about the culture and history of the country where we plan to adopt. My posts will be mostly informational but hopefully interesting and enlightening.
Our home study social worker recently told us that we would soon become a American-Bulgarian family. She talked of the importance of embracing and weaving Bulgarian traditions into the fabric of our family. Both my husband and I share a rich Christian heritage. Mine going back as far as our family tree records. Even so, we do not have a strong connection to any one country of origin. We are looking forward to fully embracing this new identity as a family.
My three boys and one daughter ages 8 ,6 ,4 and 2 are with me 90 percent of the time. We eat together, play, learn, read, eat more and so on each day. I live along side them. We do life together.
We see wonder, we experience joy, we are inpatient, get angry, say sorry and hug close. The good and the bad. We are in it together. Building memories and close unbreakable bonds.
Even so, they still want more. It can seem too much at times and I want to break free. Have some space and my space is more like a territory. This constant closeness can make my skin crawl and my heart race.

I am sitting by myself on a park bench, enjoying a cup of coffee. A cool breeze blowing, the warm evening sun filtering through the trees. A special treat and a much needed reprieve from a busy, usually crazy bedtime routine.
Time alone. This should speak freedom. Instead it seems foreign. Striking an unsettling cord.
Absent of noise, the quiet seems deafening. Without the meeting of obvious, persistent needs , I feel void of purpose. Minus the whirling, spinning, constant activity, the stillness unnerves me.
Your name means “Tower”.
This is what you have always been.
A tower of strength, a tower of refuge.
When I need someone to steady me, you were there.

To fellow mamas in the trenches.
To all who bear scars from past battles.
To grandmas and friends who are life lines, prayer warriors.
You who continue to love brave under extraordinary terms.
This is for you, with love.
Motherhood: An EXTRA-ordinary call.
Day in, day out. Simply ordinary. Never dull.

I am a perfectionist who is slowly getting used to the mess.
To letting the dust settle and the sticky messes reside.
Allowing the noise and chaos to live here because it means joy has come to stay.
The laundry keeps piling up and the floor needs to be mopped. I can’t keep it all in order anymore.
Everything in its place and everything has its place. No, this is not my life anymore. It is only a delusion.
