Pressing In

February 25, 2015 by Heather Mitchell 2 Comments

sun pouring in

It had been a long morning, the tail end of a busy week. The sun streamed bright through our french doors on this February afternoon. Though there was a crisp chill in the air, the light was radiant, the glass warm, inviting. I pressed my face into the glass, closed my eyes, letting the warmth soaked in deep, soothing my weary heart. The tension of the day, melting.

In that moment, I felt as if I were leaning, pressing in close to the God who comforts. His embrace warm, life-giving, only love. He, the only home I know that has never failed to shelter and comfort me from this weary, broken world.

I thank God for the home He has given our family. A tangible reminder of His protection, provision, care. A safe place to find rest, restoration, in a life that can easily deplete me. The pace of our culture too hectic and hurried. At times, filled with unrelenting heartbreak, loss, sorrow.

Life Words

January 31, 2015 by Heather Mitchell 2 Comments

Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.” Proverbs‬ ‭3‬:‭3‬ NIV

There are moments in my day that can weigh me down. Circumstances that make my perspective so cloudy. Days that leave me feeling like a failure and that all that I do will never amount to much. Times when I feel judged and others words and opinions become all too important.

I believe that words are powerful. I believe that words can be filled with grace and hope. Words can bring forgiveness and healing. Life words.

Honoring and Embracing Joy

January 1, 2015 by Heather Mitchell 3 Comments

“Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it everyday.”
Henri J.M. Nouwen, Dutch Priest, professor and writer

Honoring the Moments.
There is beauty and wonder in the moments. Even in the ordinary, mundane, messy, scattered and broken days. There are slivers of grace to be found. Fragments of joy yet to be discovered. I will honor my moments by remaining present, my heart wide awake to all that God has for me.

Embracing the Full Life.
Today I choose to fully embrace the life that Jesus offers in abundance. In Him my cup overflows and surly goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life. (Psalm 23: 5-6)

Seek And Find

December 17, 2014 by Heather Mitchell 3 Comments

20091030_044
He came into this world in a flurry, less than three hours after my first contraction. Wrestling wild, heart rate unstable, umbilical cord wrapped around his neck three times. He fit into the palm of my husband’s hand with spiked, jet black hair. A sparkle even then, in his sapphire eyes. One mamma’s heart growing one hundred times larger under his gaze.

Fast-forward five years, he is a flurry of endless energy and words, so many words. He is small for his age yet full of life and curiosity. He has a bold and colorful imagination, big smiles for everyone, shinning eyes and spiky golden hair. One can almost palpate his intense love for life and people.

He asked me recently while we were in the car driving, “Mommy, how do you know there is a God?”.

I am learning to lean into messy joy.
Letting go of perfection and order.
Embracing the full life God gives.

Our Anchor

November 21, 2014 by Heather Mitchell 1 Comment

anchor_sketchHe was our anchor.
A firm foundation to steady us.
A place of refuge, quiet strength.

Always there to support, to listen.
A true friend whom we could depend.
His smile, His embrace, sincere.

Everyone felt at home with Him.
Comfortable, welcome, at ease.
Slow to anger, quick to laugh.

A new season on our horizon.
Full of new life, hope, potential.
The world wide, ready to explore.

Our sky darkened, waves crashed in.
Washing away all that was certain.
Losing our bearing, pulling us under.
