A Fathers Love

June 13, 2014 by Heather Mitchell Leave a Comment

1976H - 06It was you who taught me the words to say.

The words that invited my Heavenly Father, my Jesus, to live in my life at the early age of four.

It was your love for me that gave me a sliver of understanding into the depths of His great love, for me, for us all.

Your tender and protective care for your one and only daughter, gave me a small glimpse of His greatest sacrifice.

Rest for the Weary

May 19, 2014 by Heather Mitchell Leave a Comment

rest_on_park_benchI am sitting by myself on a park bench, enjoying a cup of coffee. A cool breeze blowing, the warm evening sun filtering through the trees. A special treat and a much needed reprieve from a busy, usually crazy bedtime routine.

Time alone. This should speak freedom. Instead it seems foreign. Striking an unsettling cord.

Absent of noise, the quiet seems deafening. Without the meeting of obvious, persistent needs , I feel void of purpose. Minus the whirling, spinning, constant activity, the stillness unnerves me.

Motherhood: An EXTRA-ordinary Call

May 7, 2014 by Heather Mitchell 2 Comments

To fellow mamas in the trenches.
To all who bear scars from past battles.
To grandmas and friends who are life lines, prayer warriors.
You who continue to love brave under extraordinary terms.
This is for you, with love.

Motherhood: An EXTRA-ordinary call.

Day in, day out. Simply ordinary. Never dull.

A New Song [Printable]

April 21, 2014 by Heather Mitchell 1 Comment

I have chosen a different song for each of my children. Ever since they were babies I have tucked them in with their special song. Each unique to their personality, they grow quiet when I sing. I am not a great singer. Most of the time I am way off key but they never complain.

heartsong1Even so, there are many nights that I lie awake and wonder if I really know their heart song. If I am way off key in nurturing their little hearts. If I am singing of God’s perfect, unconditional love or screaming loud, my imperfect, conditional love.

Beautiful Pieces

April 15, 2014 by Heather Mitchell 4 Comments

Only four, my small but mighty one. Vying for attention, a mischievous grin, he spins wild in circles and tiny pieces fly in every direction. I cease to breathe for a split second.  Unintentional words and emotions fly and the mess scatters to all four corners.

Home is Where Love Lives [Printable]

February 10, 2014 by Heather Mitchell Leave a Comment

Over time, I am learning that love can be messy and not always easy. That there is constant tension and never enough space. That it can look pretty on the outside but dust and dirt resides under the rugs and clutter is in the closets. That there is no such thing as picture perfect because we are broken and something is always in need of repair. Even so, we call it home and love lives here.

Love My Coffee [Printable]

January 27, 2014 by Heather Mitchell Leave a Comment

Just the smell of coffee brings back a flood of happy memories of a simpler time. Cherished times spent at my grandparents home. I have vivid memories  of early morning, sun beginning to peak through the window, classical music playing downstairs and the rich aroma of coffee beginning to brew. My grandpa was a predictable, loyal and proud man. He took walks early every morning, ate cereal and drank his coffee while reading the daily newspaper.  He was mostly serious but had a way of telling stories about his past that made them come to life again and always made you smile. I could sit for hours and talk with him.
